Arts, Media, and Entertainment

Of all the career industries, the Arts, Media, and Entertainment sector requires per haps the greatest cross-disciplinary interaction because the work in this sector has the propensity to be largely project-based, requiring both independent work and interdependent management skills for career success. Successful career preparation involves both broad and in-depth academic and technical preparation as well as the cultivation of twenty-first-century skill assets, such as flexibility, problem-solving abilities, and interpersonal skills. Careers in the Arts, Media, and Entertainment sector fall into four general pathways: Design, Visual, and Media Arts; Performing Arts; Production and Managerial Arts; and Game Design and Integration.

  • Introduction

    Course Title: Introduction to Arts, Media, and Entertainment

    Course Description: Introduction to Digital Art is a foundational course designed to provide students with exposure to the major components of the field. Students will explore elements of design in order to produce art as visual communication. Additionally, students will acquire basic knowledge about digital software such as Adobe Photoshop to manipulate images in a variety of ways. Successful completion of the course will enable students to pursue advanced study in either Graphic Design or Digital Photography.

    Course Title: Digital Photography

    Course Description: Digital Photography is a yearlong course that focuses on understanding the basic operations and functions of a digital single-lens reflex camera and the manipulation of its settings to achieve a specific result. Students will learn about photographic elements of art and principles of design, composition, and lighting. They will explore the history of photography, learning about its scientific and technological developments, important innovators in the field, and relevance within diverse cultural contexts. Students will write and speak about aesthetic, technical, and expressive qualities in a photograph, learning to critique their own and other’s work. Students learn image techniques and digital manipulation using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, teaching them how to archive, organize, and optimize their photographs for print or web purposes. Students will learn how to manage and creatively alter digital images as well as critically analyze the use of visual media as a means of communication in our society today. They will be provided a greater level of autonomy, expected to pursue their own interests and develop an individual voice. Students will explore the significance of photography within the larger context of the art world, and learn about the critical and varied application it has to the modern working world.

    Course Title: Advanced Photography

    Course Description: Students will focus on more advanced concepts in Digital Photography, including Studio Portraiture, Off-Camera Lighting and Long Exposure techniques. They will also be introduced to more detailed Projects using school and local events to generate content. Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom will also be explored more in-depth. Repeatable for credit.

    Course Title: Graphic Design 1

    Course Description: Graphic Design I is an introduction to art that is intended to communicate information and to advertise. Students will explore the five elements of design (line, shape, mass, texture, and color) as the basic building blocks for a conceptual understanding of effective visual communication. Additionally, the course focuses on the study and use of layout concepts used in the graphic design field. Students will employ both analog media (pencil and paper drawing) and digital media (using up-to-date computer software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator) to create graphic design projects with real-world applications.

    Course Title: Advanced Media Broadcasting

    Course Description: A continuation of the intro course, students will progress towards animation and 3D modeling. They will also take on more advanced image branding campaigns, focusing on businesses in the local area. Focus on Adobe After Effects will be a new addition to the Creative Cloud applications. Repeatable for credit.

    Course Description: This project-based course is designed to provide practical, specific journalistic experiences with the main, end result the production of a professional yearbook. The course goals focus on the expository aspect of the reading and reporting (oral and written), extensive practice in writing that goes through a thorough editing and revision process as well as substantial reading of expository sources and other materials that develop imperative skills and rigorous training on written themes including body copy, interviewing, captions and headlines, and visuals including photography and designing layouts. Students will need to evaluate information and convey intricate or multifaceted information to the student body. Yearbook teaches real-world skills such as meeting deadlines, teamwork, working with advanced and professional technology, communication skills, marketing skills, and independent thinking skills.

    Course Title: Ceramics A

    Course Description: Ceramics is a yearlong studio art course that is designed to develop the artistic skills of the student artist. Instruction will focus on the 3-dimensional application of the elements of art and the principles of design. Construction techniques will be emphasized through the use of diverse techniques in hand-building such as slab, mold, coil, and extruding as well as throwing on the potter wheel. Students will learn to finish their work with colored slips, glazes, and relief techniques. Students will also be expected to have a comprehensive understanding of the history of this sculptural medium as it pertains to their own sense of creative expression as well as art historical and cultural references. Students will maintain a sketchbook throughout the year for idea generation, note-taking, and feedback.
